National Firearms Register II
The National Firearms Register (“NWR”), with data on firearms that require a permit and details of purchasers, owners and transferors of such firearms, has been successfully maintained in Germany for many years. A project is now in place to expand and extend the National Firearms Register (“NWR II”), and aims to have the register cover the entire lifecycle of a firearm and all its components from the point of manufacture or importation through to its destruction or export. The register will undergo a facelift at the same time. In the future, all firearm manufacturers and dealers will input details of all transactions that must be notified to the National Firearms Register via the head end. Expanding the NWR will make a direct contribution toward bolstering domestic security in Germany. It will also fully meet the requirements of the amendment to the European Firearms Directive (Directive (EU) 2017/853 of 17 May 2017), which must be transposed into national law.
All aspects of the intended operation of the expanded NWR will be illustrated. A summary will also be provided of how the NWR has operated to date.
