The spherical powder is a nitro-cellulose smokeless powder manufactured according to an original process developed in the years 30s, by the “Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation” -USA.
The wet process technique is used for the manufacture of this powder, which is in fact its most essential and typical feature. The process combines increased safety with high flexibility and adaptation to numerous applications.
The spherical powder is generally a double base smokeless powder, coated with a burning modifier that ensures a progressive combustion and consequently optimal ballistic properties. The grains are graphited and may have their surface covered by a flash-less agent and, in some cases, a copper less-agent. The bulk density can range between 500 and 1050g/l.
The spherical powder is perfectly suitable for the loading of all types of military ammunitions (including blank) for calibre up to 40 mm, as well as for mortar bombs. It satisfies the most severe specifications. It meets the NATO requirements, as well as the national ones (Europeans, Russians, ...).
Spherical powder is also perfectly suitable for the loading of civilian ammunitions for rifle or handgun satisfying the CIP and
/or SAAMI requirements.
Beside shotshells for sport or hunting, ammunitions for competition or peace keeping forces, it is also used in many other applications like: power tools, breaking charges in spatial application, ammunitions for cattle killing, cartridges for furnaces cleaning in cement industry, cartridges for gas generators in the automotive industry, ...
Spherical powders present superiority over conventional
powders:
- A better physical and chemical stability
- A better storage guarantee
- Less barrel wear due to a lower flame temperature
- Reduced hygroscopicity
- Higher bulk density
- Improved loading density in connection also with the excellent free flowing characteristics
- Ballistic uniformity at extreme utilisation temperatures
