For over 60 years Sierra Bullets has been dedicated to the manufacture of the most accurate bullets in the world. This commitment to performance has established a "Tradition of Precision" for which Sierra is known throughout the world.
Over the years, much has changed in the industry and in the marketplace. One common thread running throughout this time however, has been Sierra's focus on bullets. Hunting and target bullets for rifles and handguns are the only products we make and we work hard to make them better than anyone else. If you consider the large number of serious shooters who use nothing but Sierra and the many accuracy records held by marksmen shooting Sierra bullets, we believe we accomplish our objective of a better bullet.
Sierra began in 1947 in the California Quonset hut building pictured on the front cover of the reloading manual. At the time, the second world war had just ended, shooting popularity was rising to unprecedented levels and the supply of high quality ammunition was limited. Shooters were discovering that to satisfy their own demand, reloading was the answer.
In 1990, Sierra left its factory in Santa Fe Springs, California for a new beginning in Sedalia, Missouri. Armed with years of experience in the manufacturing and testing of our quality bullets, Sierra designed and built one of the industry's most advanced manufacturing facilities. While integrating the best of the old with the new, we enhanced our tool and die shop, upgraded our metallurgical laboratory and quality control systems, redesigned our process for washing and polishing bullets and improved our bullet assembly equipment. Our shining star however was the construction of an underground, 300 meter, test range, the longest privately owned underground bullet test facility in the world. Without it, we would not be able to conduct the degree of accuracy testing necessary for our stringent quality control requirements, nor would we be capable of producing the reloading manuals at the level we do.
5th Edition ManualThis 1152 page manual retains the popular three-ring binder format and has been modernized with new cartridge information, histories and reloading recommendations. New bullets, new cartridges and new powders make this manual a necessity in every reloader's library.
The Sections include: a complete glossary of ballistic, reloading and firearms terminology, an updated section dealing with the reloading process, reloading tools and equipment, bore care and firearms cleaning.
Renowned ballistic experts Ted Almgren and Bill McDonald have condensed the section dealing with exterior ballistics into one of the most comprehensive dissertations available on the subject today. There's also a unique question and answer chapter with some of the most commonly asked (and some of the more unusual) questions fielded by our technical service line.
All bullets in this classification are for hunting and all have boat tails. Their shapes include hollow point boat tail (HPBT), spitzer boat tail (SBT), and full metal jacket boat tail (FMJBT). The bullets in this classification have medium to heavy weights in each caliber. With their boat tail shapes, they have high ballistic coefficients, retain their velocities well, and resist crosswinds and vertical winds well as they fly. These bullets are designed for a combination of penetration and expansion in medium and heavy game animals for their calibers.
Infinity Suite Version 7
Sierra's INFINITY Exterior Ballistic Computer Software version 7 provides multiple trajectory charts and graphics, point blank range, calculate zero, uphill/downhill shooting, maximum range, minute of angle, profiled wind, improved atmospherics, revised print formats trajectory in mils and more. Easy to use Windows format makes INFINITY extremely user friendly. Bullet library includes all major bullet companies as well as ammunition companies and allows for addition of new and custom bullets. Renowned Sierra Ballistic Consultants Ted Almgren and Dr. Bill McDonald, who have written all Sierra Software since 1970, also wrote INFINITY 7. Both are retired Chief Scientists from a major aerospace company. This program is available in CD-Rom format only. Interface and program architecture design by Rodney Korn.
System requirements are: Windows® XP, Vista, 7, or 8, 800x600 resolution, and 120MB hard drive space.
This is the classification for Sierra's pre-eminent target bullets. The driving motivation for the design of each MatchKing bullet is accuracy. These bullets have very thin jackets drawn to an exacting concentricity standard of 0.0003 in maximum variation, and their weight is held to within ± 0.3 grain. All MatchKing have a hollow point design with a very small meplat for high ballistic coefficient. The majority of these bullets have a boat tail shape to further minimize drag and improve ballistic coefficient. They are manufactured to the very highest quality standards. Their accuracy has been acclaimed worldwide, and they have been used to win more target competitions than all target bullets from other manufacturers combined. While they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy, MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications.
Sierra has enhanced a segment of the MatchKing line by adding the acetal resin tip, thus crowning the Tipped MatchKing (TMK) bullet line. The major advantage of adding a tip to the bullet is the reduction of drag, producing a more favorable ballistic coefficient. Another benefit is reliable feeding in magazine fed firearms.
While they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy, MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications. Although MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are commonly used for varmint hunting, their design will not provide the same reliable explosive expansion at equivalent velocities in varmints compared to their lightly jacketed Hornet, Blitz or Varminter counterparts.
