The steel that goes into Brusletto Knives

Knifemakers can order directly through Brusletto. Brusletto knife blades are available in different styles and steel types, and are honed for different uses.

Carbon steel: This is a specially developed carboniferous knife-edge steel - extra hard throughout. It is especially resistant to cuts and bluntness, but is more vulnerably to rust!

Stainless carbon steel: This is our best quality. The steel is treated with chromium (same steel as razor blades), and does not rust. Most of our finished knives are made of this steel.

Laminated steel: In order to maintain our traditions, we still make laminated knife blades. The core is made of carbon steel, while a softer steel of the same thickness is adhered to either side of the edge. This makes the knife somewhat quicker to hone, but more vulnerable to rust.

Bright and dull knife blades: The steel is as described above, but the bright blades are also polished and ground with a ceramic stone. This process makes the blade become blank, still hard and resisistant to rust.

Flat ground edge: Most Brusletto knives have a flat ground edge. This makes the knives suitable for everyday use, such as whittling wood. (Rognald, Kystkniven, Fisker'n, Hunter, Sølvgutten, Haugtussa, Speider, Norrøn)

Hollow ground edge: Knives with a hollow ground edge are best suited for hunting (Falken).

Normal ground edge: Knives with a normal ground edge are "all-round" knives which can be used for hunting as well as slicing bread (Norgeskniven, Granbit, Trollkniven, Bamsen, Nansen, Bruslettoknife, Barnekniven, Middelalder, Renessanse).
