From on generation to the next
Blacksmith Janne Marttiini established J Marttiinin Puukkotehdas in Rovaniemi in 1928. In those days the whole knife production process, beginning with forging the blade, was done manually. Marttiini, working as factory manager, attended to his marketing requirements on a bicycle. In his time, Janne Marttiini was an especially innovative manager. He emphasised product development and had the energy to travel extensively to expand his sales region and improve his market share. Even by the 1920s the Marttiini factory was aiming towards achieving reliable high quality by developing production methods and the professional skills of the employees.

Arctic experience
The Marttiini knife factory has a long tradition in combining handicraft skills and practical needs. For people in the arctic region, a knife has always been an important means of survival in harsh conditions. Knives were a necessity in collecting firewood and making a fire, making tools and implements, construction, hunting, fishing, and preparing the kill for cooking and eating. Nobody left home without a knife: many wanderers were saved by the knife on their belt which they used instead of an ice pick if the ice broke and the wanderer ended up in cold water. Knife handling was learned at an early age. Knives were produced for men, women and minors so that the knives would suite the user’s size, strength, and purpose of use. Knives meant to be worn at festive occasions alongside Sunday-best clothing are equipped with a nicely decorated stealth, handle and ferrule. A beautiful knife also serves as an ornament. Women may wear delicate, ornamented knives on a necklace.

A pioneer since 1928
At Marttiini, experience in production, professional skills, and firm handicraft traditions that have been refined over the course of generations, are combined with carefully chosen materials, contemporary technology, computer aided design and efficient serial production. As a result of bias-free solutions, a knife that is correctly maintained will serve its master during the latter’s entire lifetime.

Beautiful and practical
Marttiini knives have always been designed with their purpose and user in mind. The correct handy tool for the right purpose. Stylish design also plays an important role in the planning and production of handicraft tools. Professional skills and long experience are not just felt but also seen.

Marttini and Rapala
In the autumn of 2005 the international fishing supplies group Rapala VMC purchased the entire capital stock of Marttiini Oy from the Marttiini family. On one hand the transaction strengthened Rapala’a position as one of the top fishing supplies provider in the world, and, on the other hand, boosted the worldwide sale of the Marttiini products.

Marttiini knives are made for the user.
