The FOLDING HIDE was created to make it more portable than the Back-Up HIDE knife from which it derives its style and quality though we have maintained the robustness and versatility of its fixed brother.
The handle is larger than that of the fixed blade so as to accommodate the Lock back. The complexity of the locking system has challenged the Fantoni artisans to keep a low weight and they have achieved this by varying the thickness of the various components. These enhancements have been carried over into other areas where the clip is attached to a spacer, for example, enabling the knife to be hidden if it hangs in a pocket.

For a long time Mr Renzo Fantoni was interested in the precision drop-forging of turbine blades for thermal, nuclear and gas power station. There was always a very close co-operation with a lot of famous customers (Franco Tosi & Ansaldo, Alsthom, Gec, ABB, KWU, Siemens, GE, De Laval) and the workshops of the most important steel-plants with regard to materials and their treatments. To comply with the changing needs of his customers, Mr. Fantoni himself and his firm had to pursue a research activity in order to get front line positions as an answer to new technological challenges.
The firm also manufactured different kinds of knives – for household and professional use. As a matter of fact, the English word “BLADE” means knife or turbine blade. If we refer to household knives, designers were already a very important – and often necessary – figures when design was considered a mere cavil. Without doubt, Mr Fantoni was the first who required the presence of a designer – Mr Moris Baroni – more than twenty years ago in the sports-cutlery production sector. The results of this co-operation have been excellent. Up to now, a lot of products remain the same as they were originally designed; this is due to the fact that they are still topical. The co-operation of other designers (or custom makers) such as R.W. Loveless and Bill Harsey, was also requested by the U.S market..
Danilo Roman Ross designed also some knives and tools. Prof. Enzo Mari will be the new comer.
Over the years Mr Fantoni held highly responsible position in the industrialists’ associations (Council member of the “ Piccola & Media Industria” of Industrial Association in Pordenone, and then President of Export Api in Pordenone). Among other things, he was the first to promote a series of lectures about the “just in time” concept as a result of the introduction of Quality Assurance System.
The “know-how” was also transferred as much as possible to high quality sport-cutlery. Fantoni s.r.l. can offer drop-forged martensitic stainless steel fixed blade hunting knives, drop-forged titanium and stainless steel liners/bolsters for folding knives (first firm to use this technology).Beside this, knives made out of steel strips are also available. You can find several kinds of steel on the market to-day: their chemical structure and mechanical properties are excellent, but some of these can not be forged.
In this case, too, Mr Fantoni’s “know-how” experience and training were a great help for defining the product lines and their manufacturing processes. In confirmation of its technological “know-how”, Fantoni S.r.l. is proud to inform that they are working with some steel-plants (Sandvik & Crucible) engaged in highly advanced research on testing new kinds of steel to be used for high quality cutlery. The relation between old and new customers – all over the world – is a great help for improving the knowledge of new product and process technologies. It is very important for this firm to involve its designers in this innovating activity.
