The Greeks believed that a healthy mind and morality needed a healthy body too. As a matter of fact Plato wrote that the healthiest type of hunting was “......for four-legged game with the help of horses, dogs and your own body”. Plato’s statement referred to the very specific model of heroic hunts by Achilles, who harvested wild boar using his javelin. This type of hunting brought the hunter face to face with the prey in its own natural environment, often impervious and dangerous to the hunter.
Spears, arrows and javelins have been replaced with new and refined firearms created by men who always strive to pursue wild game. The firearm becomes one with the hunter - it is the symbol of his way of acting and being. Men became “Sapiens” only after learning how to be “Faber” i.e. only after learning to build firearms which could help them overcome their inferiority over the animal world. The fascination of this type of hunt still enchants modern hunters who rely on a very specific type of firearm for their driven and big game hunting. Of course we are talking about double rifles which were introduced in the early part of last century and derived their name from the famous “express” train, symbol of the modernity and progress of the colonial world at the end of the 1800s. For a manufacturer of sporting guns, the Express represents a target to be reached and a new start at the same time. That is true for Fausti – famous Italian gunmaker founded in 1948 and led with great dynamism by three Fausti sisters Elena, Giovanna and Barbara. Everybody knows that all Fausti shotguns, either side by side shotguns, over and under shotguns or semiautomatics, acquire an aura of classicism which makes them timeless and refined. It is difficult to be on a hunt in Italy, Europe, Russia, the United States or even Saudi Arabia and Australia without meeting a hunter who is proudly carrying a Fausti shotgun, a loyal companion to share travels and adventures with. Cosmopolitan by vocation, the range of products manufactured by the Italian company – from the most deluxe and refined models to the most inexpensive and practical – can be told apart for their strong personality, character and passion which animate them. The three Fausti sisters – all of them being very good hunters - have instilled in their new Class Express guns their passion for hunting. They have created a solid and elegant over and under double rifle series bored in many different calibers such as the 7 x 65R, 8 x 57 JRS, 9,3 x 74R, .30 R Blaser, .30-06, .444 Marlin, .45-70 US Government and more.
As soon as you hold this elegant and light weight gun you will notice how easy it is to handle. You will also realize that it embodies all the feline power and precision this type of firearm needs. The frame derived from the 20ga caliber with its generous, reinforced sides is the perfect combination of style and effectiveness. It features very low profile with double fences, a beautiful engraving of renaissance inspiration executed with a deep-chiseling laser technique, and a slender, pierced top lever. It comes with either coin finish or jaspèe finish only on request. The rounded hinge pins are completely interchangeable. The receiver is machined by removing material which preserves grain integrity and increases resistance to the stress generated while shooting. Barrels are jointed to the receiver employing a pair of strong lugs engaging a generously-sized locking bolt. Barrels play a key role in this type of firearm. Barrels in double rifles are rifled to make the spherical-shaped loads rotate very rapidly and acquire a very fast motion of translation at the same time. These barrels must have very specific features. First, they need to withstand very high internal pressure which is possible only through precise machining and use of very good materials. For the barrels of the Class Express, Fausti uses a special Nickel-chrome steel alloy and machine it to perfection in order to guarantee perfect concentricity between internal and external profile.
For our test, we have reviewed a Class Express rifle with 60-cm long barrels featuring perfectly executed and polished rifling, adjustable fiber optic sight, V rear sight, scope mounts and welded-on sling swivels. The barrel flats were also nicely jeweled. Beautiful solid side and top ribs were another example of that classicism one does not often sees in this category of guns.
Precise barrel regulation is extremely important with this type of firearm and it is done by hand in the shooting tunnel at Fausti by very specialized craftsmen. A barrel is considered acceptable when it shoots 2 shots within a 2 inch circle at 50 meters. On request, the Class Express can be provided with interchangeable smooth bore barrel in 20ga.
The firing mechanism consists of a proven and reliable Anson & Deeley-type non selective single trigger. The beautiful oil-polished stock with Bavarian cheek piece and slender Schnabel forend are carved from select walnut. The stocks are finished with a very fine “Scottish-pattern” checkering which completes the essential and captivating line of this firearm. The utmost care is given to every detail of the Class Express series rifles; something the craftsmen at Fausti are very proud of. The automatic ejection system is controlled by two robust ejectors, designed with efficient rationality.
The Class Express by Fausti is the best possible choice for all those hunters who want a technically reliable gun which is also beautiful and elegant.
